The eight limbs or steps of yoga are: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. These are sequential stages in an individual’s life journey through yoga. Let’s discuss them one by one starting with YAMA.
YAMA explains the codes of ethical behaviour to be observed and followed in everyday life, reminding us of our responsibilities as social beings. YAMA has 5 principles. These are:
- Non-violence – nurturing introspection to replace negative, destructive thoughts.
- Freedom from avarice or greed.
- Truthfulness.
- Chastity – not total abstinence, but denotes a disciplined sexual lifestyle promoting contentment and moral strength.
- Freedom from the desire to possess.
